Iran fuel for Lebanon
An Iranian vessel carrying fuel for Lebanon has arrived in Syrian waters. According to Lebanese media, the vessel will unload its cargo at one of Syrian ports from where the fuel consignment will be transferred to Lebanon by tankers. The Hezbollah resistance movement will donate part of the fuel to government hospitals and similar institutions. Afterwards, a private company will be tasked with selling the fuel to private organizations and power-generating bodies. Two more fuel tankers are preparing to depart to help ease Lebanon’s fuel shortages. Still, a fourth fuel vessel is likely to leave Iran in the near future. Lebanon is facing fuel shortages, which Hezbollah blames on US sanctions.
EU mulls reaction force
Calls are growing in the European Union for the creation of a rapid reaction force, after the bloc was recently sidelined by the United States in Afghanistan. EU foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell said the need for more European defense has never been more urgent. Slovenia, which holds the bloc’s rotating presidency, says a rapid response force could consist of 5,000 to 20,000 soldiers. The Slovenian defense minister has called for a new system to allow EU troops dispatched if a majority of member states agree to deployments. Germany has also stressed the need for the EU to become more autonomous.
Saudi Arabia 9/11 role
Families of 9/11 victims call for a probe into whether the FBI lied about or destroyed evidence linking Saudi Arabia to the terrorist attacks. The request was made in a letter to Justice Department Inspector Michael Horowitz and signed by around 3,500 people. They also criticized the FBI for what they called the repeated mishandling of the missing evidence. The victims’ families have repeatedly demanded a fresh review of all documents, particularly into Riyadh’s role in the attacks. They are currently suing the Saudi government in a federal court. Nearly 3,000 people were killed on September 11, 2001, when hijacked airplanes smashed into the World Trade Center towers in New York. Fifteen of the 19 hijackers were Saudi citizens.
